STEM Activity Making Walkie Talkies in P5 & 6

23rd Jan 2018

Today the children became inventors and made their own Walkie Talkies using paper cups and string. The children experimented with holding the cups at various distances from their mouth or ear and took turns at being a talker or a listener.  They predicted whether their Walkie Talkie would work at each distance. The children discovered that if the string wasn’t tight, or if the cup was a distance from their mouth or ear they weren’t able to hear each other. Mrs Hagan then set the children a challenge to find out why this happened. Through researching  we discovered that the sound waves from the talker caused the speakers cup to vibrate, these vibrations travelled down the taut string, to the listener’s cup, where it was transformed back into sound waves.  The children really enjoyed their STEM activity and impressed Mrs Hagan with how well they worked! 😁
