Science Experiment
Today the children took part in a science experiment where they were investigating which substances react with baking soda. Firstly we discussed what we mean by the term reaction and what kind of things would indicate that a reaction has taken place. We decided on 7 different substances to test ; vinegar, water, vegetable oil, lemon juice, lime juice,Diet Coke and fairy liquid. The children made their predictions first on what they thought would react with the baking soda, and I have to admit they were very accurate with their predictions!! We then talked about the need for a fair test and measured out exactly 10ml of each substances and a teaspoon of baking soda. The children couldn’t wait to get at it and had a lot of fun testing out the substances even though some of them were very smelly (the vinegar)!! After the testing we recorded our results and concluded that if a substance reacts with baking soda fizzing occurs, if it does not react then there is no fizzing! Ask the children about their results!
